Residents and newcomers alike are invited to step outside and explore Moose Jaw’s winter landscape through Welcome Outdoors, a new series of gentle, inclusive outdoor walks taking place this February at Crescent Park.
For this event, participants will explore footprints, animal tracks, and other subtle signs of wildlife activity, with opportunities to make simple drawings or take photos along the way.
Welcome Outdoors is a SaskOutdoors initiative created to support newcomers to Saskatchewan in getting outside and feeling safe, confident, and connected in nearby nature locations within their communities. Short, positive outdoor experiences with friends and family help build familiarity with local natural spaces and foster a sense of belonging - supporting overall well-being through time spent outdoors.
Facilitated locally by community educator Karla Rasmussen, the Moose Jaw sessions are designed to be welcoming and low-barrier. While the program is especially inviting for newcomers and those new to Moose Jaw, everyone is encouraged to participate.
As part of the program, Welcome Outdoors facilitators build relationships with local newcomer centres and cultural organizations, share accessible information, and ensure a safe, positive, and welcoming experience for participants of all ages.
An important and unique aspect of Welcome Outdoors is the invitation for long-time residents to take part alongside newcomers. Shared time wandering through natural spaces creates opportunities for conversation, learning, and relationship-building that might not otherwise happen.
The Welcome Outdoors program will continue in Moose Jaw through the spring, with additional events planned from February through May in different outdoor spaces. Community members are encouraged to watch for more details as new sessions are announced.
